Hunger Strikers Ask Mayor: Use $1B Surplus To Make Philly More Affordable

Erica Brown is on a hunger strike to convince Mayor Cherelle Parker to put Philly’s $1.1 billion surplus towards helping people who are struggling to eat, find affordable housing, and survive in this city.

On this week’s Hall Monitor livestream, we speak to Brown, from the Sunrise Movement, about how she would allocate the city’s record surplus to help the people who need it most.

We also ask Reclaim Philadelphia’s executive director, Seth Anderson-Oberman, who joined Brown for three days in solidarity, what he would prioritize in the budget if he were mayor.

And we speak to education reporter Lisa Haver about the school district budget, which recently passed despite its reliance on uncertain revenue.

Our reporters sit through hours of city council meetings, dig through piles of documents, and ask tough questions other media overlook. Because we’re committed to addressing Philadelphia’s poverty crisis — and challenging those who sustain it. If you think this work is important too, please support our journalism.
