Local Organizations Will Matter More Now Than Ever

In light of Tuesday’s election, Hall Monitor will work to highlight organizations across the city who work with communities who are likely to be most affected by the incoming administration’s prejudices. In the coming weeks, Hall Monitor’s radio and television program will conduct interviews with members of these communities to hear how they are preparing for the incoming inauguration, and to learn how non-members of these communities can be helpful.

Below are local organizations who work with the LGTBQ+ community.

The Attic Youth Center:

The Attic Youth Center creates opportunities for LGBTQ youth to develop into healthy, independent, civic-minded adults within a safe and supportive community and promotes the acceptance of LGBTQ youth in society.

William Way Center Peer Counseling Program:

The Peer Counseling Program of the William Way LGBT Community Center offers one-to-one counseling that is confidential and free of charge. We offer short-term, goal-oriented counseling by addressing many of the crucial issues facing members of our community, including:

  • Coming out
  • Sexual identity
  • Relationships
  • Family issues
  • Isolation and loneliness
  • Substance abuse
  • HIV and AIDS
  • Aging
  • Legal issues
  • Health and safety

Peer counselors are also available to meet personally with groups and organizations who would like to learn more about the services we offer. Please contact info@waygay.org about scheduling a presentation.

The Mazzoni Center:

To provide quality comprehensive health and wellness services in an LGBTQ-focused environment, while preserving the dignity and improving the quality of life of the individuals we serve.

The University of Pennsylvania has compiled a comprehensive list of LGBTQ+ resources that can be found here

We are also greatly concerned about the future of immigrants residing in Philadelphia. Below are important local resources that could be beneficial to local immigrant communities:

The Defender Association of Philadelphia:

The Defender Association of Philadelphia provides high-quality, client-centered legal representation, courtroom advocacy, and a connection to social services.

We strive to protect the Constitution, ensure a fair and equitable criminal justice system, and improve outcomes for vulnerable populations.

Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network:

The Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network is a statewide consortium of independent legal aid programs that provides civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families. The Network is comprised of eight regional legal aid programs, providing legal assistance to eligible clients in every county in Pennsylvania, and six specialized legal aid programs, providing legal services in specialized areas of the law or to special groups of eligible clients.

Justice at Work:

Justice at Work provides legal representation for workers in Pennsylvania. We help workers with different types of cases, such as problems at work and immigration issues. We also provide community education about workers’ rights and trainings for service providers.

For more information about organizations dedicated to assisting in the immigrant community, HIAS Pennsylvania has compiled a useful list.

Our reporters sit through hours of city council meetings, dig through piles of documents, and ask tough questions other media overlook. Because we’re committed to addressing Philadelphia’s poverty crisis — and challenging those who sustain it. If you think this work is important too, please support our journalism.

We’re counting on readers like you.
